Beach Trip 2013

Ah, family beach trip 2013. It was good.
I really didn’t take a lot of pictures with my ‘big’ camera…. 3 kids and a sandy beach made finding time to pull out the camera, take pictures and then safely pack it back up a little tough. Plus, I really try to live in the moment when I am with my family, and not behind the camera. It’s hard though, because I wanted both. I wanted to capture gorgeous pictures to remember it all, but I also wanted to be there. Be present.

And so, I used my iphone and instagram a lot. As in, if you follow me on Instagram you may have rolled your eyes and said “enough!” and if you don’t follow me… well, feel free to do so! You can find me under the name bobbie__brown (that’s two underscores) :)

We went out on the beach right after getting there and grabbing a bite to eat. We didn’t bother with bathing suits, and within 5 seconds everyone was wet! Can you tell they were just a little bit excited?

Here are a few teeny tiny collages with some of the iPhone pictures… Sigh… I don’t know why they are so small, but now that they are here, I have decided to just leave them and move on to the list of things I need to be doing instead of fixing this. I know, totally professional of me. But, feel free to click on these to see them larger.

Ivory

This session got rescheduled several times due to rain. Then, on the day we finally had great weather, Ivory wasn’t her usual happy/smiley self. The next day they discovered she had a double ear infection :( Poor baby. But, we still managed to get some gorgeous pictures! (yay!)

I had to include this real-life shot.. you know, we work hard to get everything ready for the shoot, thinking our kids will love it and have fun, and then this!

Light

Linden chose the word ‘light’ as our 2nd focus for Click of the Wild. I am so excited to see what everyone posts! ‘Light’ can have so many different meanings. Light as in the natural light we have, man-made lights, a light salad or something light in the form of weight…. the possibilities are endless!
In case your wondering, we do not tell each other about - or show each other – our images before we post them. When we post the images on the Click of the Wild blog is when we all see what each other captured.

At the beach Stuart woke me up to go watch the sunrise one morning. It was absolutely beautiful and I felt was a great example of ‘light’…

But the image that I chose to use was this one. This is how I want to interpret my version of ‘Light’:
2013-09-30_0001.jpg

Inspiration for this shot actually came to me in church. We were reading from the Acts of the Apostles and how Paul was inspired to spread the word of Christ. That got me to thinking; how do I spread His word? And the idea for this shot started to take shape. It’s really not at all how I envisioned it, I was hoping for a shot at sunset where the sun rays were hitting the steeple just right to create beautiful, soft light with lots of sun flare. But, I quickly realized a lot of things would have to be just right for me to get that shot. So I shot from a few different angles at two different times of the day and settled on this shot. I love how the tree’s frame the steeple and cross and how it is in the ‘light’ part of the picture. And those Carolina blue skies…I love that too!

Now, head over to Click of the Wild and see how Alicia, Mallory, Linden and Molly see ‘light’ :)

Mallory

Mallory is a friend, and a photographer (you can see her work here). She is currently undergoing a lifestyle change and was in need of some “transformation” pictures as well as some new headshots for her business.
The day we did this shoot was rainy. Then sunny. Then rainy. Then sunny. And humid. But we got out there and had so much fun!
2013-09-25_0003.jpg

2013-09-25_0004.jpg

This camera is extra special to Mallory. Her “Mum” (that is what she calls her Grandmother) found this camera in a ditch beside the road when she was a young girl, she used it for years then gave it to Mallory awhile back. So it was a must that we get some pictures of her with this camera..

We had just finished up when the sun came out again and I was all “ohhh, in 30 minutes that field is going to be gorgeous if the sun stays out!” and she was all “Oh if I were shooting I’d be out there right now!” Then we had a discussion on how I thought it was too bright and she thought it was just right. We hopped out and got a few shots and I ended up loving them!
Thanks Mal, for pushing me outside of my comfort zone….

Mallory, you rocked this shoot. And I loved having you in front of my camera! XoXo

Lorelei and Juliet {Newborn Session}

Brittany is a friend of mine, married to my cousin, in fact. And they recently had twin girls! She called me and asked me to do a newborn session for her when the babies were about 3 weeks old. Typically, a newborn session is best done before the baby is 11 days old. For several reasons…but one of the reasons is they are still in that sleepy newborn state…normally. So the fact that they were a little bit older and moving around more, and the fact that there was two babies instead of one. Well, I was a little nervous! Also, the way I like to shoot newborns is in the home, in the Momma’s arms, in their space, etc. I don’t do a lot of props and posing – I do some – but I like to capture the home and the surroundings and the baby among all of it. Brittany and her family (she and Mark had two little boys already) are living in a small house while they build a new home. They don’t even have all of their furniture and belongings in the house. It is an older house that is a bit dated, and Brittany was just not feeling it. After talking about it we decided she would bring the girls to my house for a few pictures of them together and then (I sorta had to talk her into this, thankfully she trusted me!) we would go back to her house and get a few of her and the girls together. Temporary bed, paneled walls and all. But, as a photographer, I feel strongly about capturing each phase of life. Even the parts we don’t love, or even if it’s just temporary, to me, it’s beautiful. Really, it is.
Now, I am gonna keep it real here. We started the session at my house and I am not posting a single image from that part. Why? Because I failed. I didn’t really get any great shots of both girls together. It was hard. So hard. I learned quickly that to photograph a newborn you need at least two sets of hands to get them into any kind of pose together. And even then it is still tough.  But, when we went over to her house, I easily captured images I love. Images I feel that they will look back on and cherish and talk about that tiny house with four kids packed in it. Images that tell the story of where they are right now and what life looks like. It looks like love and sweet babies in Momma’s arms and big brothers leaning on the bed to look and eating corn dogs. This is life, and this is how I love to capture it.

2013-09-23_0023.jpg

Now, as much as I adored those images I felt terrible that I failed at getting at least several good shots of just Lorelei and Juliet together. I told my photog friend Molly how nervous I was to even look at the images and how I felt like I didn’t get any great ones of them together. She offered to help me if Brittany was willing to bring the girls over again.
Now, Molly is a fabulous newborn photographer. She captures newborns so beautifully, she shoots a totally different style than me. Props, backdrops, etc. But I love it. I feel that each style is beautiful in it’s own way. Just like each photographer has a different way of capturing things, it can all be beautiful. Just in different ways. Molly’s newborn sessions always make me swoon and when she offered to help me I knew that together, we could get some great shots of Lorelei and Juliet.
So, I made that awkward phone call and told Brittany how I felt. Thankfully she was totally understanding and said “Bobbie, I asked you to do this and I want you to love your work. And, I want pictures of my girls together. Yes I’ll come over again!”
Thank you Brittany!

This time we set up at Molly’s house and it was a success. Molly, thank you…over and over again!

We went to the beach last week.

It was fabulous.

2013-09-22_0001.jpg

But now we are back home and have a busy week ahead. I’ll post more on our beach trip soon, but I just wanted to say a huge Thank You for the positive response we’ve had on the “Click of the Wild” blog. I am blown away by your kindness and the number of hits we’ve had over there. Thank you! When we were talking about and planning this little project we spoke of how we really just wanted to use it to push ourselves, and inspire one another, and if we had people follow our blog, well that was just a bonus. We are so happy and excited to have your positive feedback, and I hope that we may be able to inspire others in some small way… I think there may even be a group of friends planning a ‘craft night’ after seeing our ‘nerd nights’ posted all over Social Media! Love it!
I don’t think I mentioned before, but this project was inspired by another fabulous blog “You are my Wild” definitely check them out if you haven’t already. They all take amazing pictures of their kids that are a constant inspiration to me and a reminder that the simple moments are often the best. I feel bad that I failed to link to their blog in my last post!

I’ll be back this week sharing more shoots. So stay tuned!

Morning

For a few years now, I have been a part of a great group of friends who all share my love of photography. In fact, that is our common interest, the thing that brought us all together in the first place.
We love to get together and talk all things photography, toss idea’s around, share tips and tricks, talk about frustrations, inspiration, share images we are happy with or excited about, and the list goes on. Often, we get off on other subjects that have nothing to do with photography. And I love that too. We call it “Nerd Night” when we get together, since most people would consider our topic of conversation ‘nerdy’. We eat good food and ‘nerd it out’… :)

We have been working on a project for a few months now. A project we hope will push us to shoot differently, and better. We hope to grow as photographers in doing this and in general force us to shoot things we might not typically shoot.

The plan is for us to have a ’focus’ every two weeks. We will shoot for that focus word or phrase and then we will all post one image on our blog, Click of the Wild.

We are each very different in our photography styles, so to see how we all approach the same word or phrase will be interesting. Or really, how we each see that word or phrase will be interesting.

So, without further ado, our first focus word is “Morning”. I chose this image to share over on our blog… I love it because I feel like it is how I see our mornings; pretty sunshine shining through the window’s…messy bed…and, the winning factor for me in this image, Kennedy’s shadow stretching. I love it.

2013-09-12_0013.jpg

I had several I liked, so I decided to share them here…. I had taken a similar picture (below) with my iPhone a few weeks ago, and I decided to try to re-create it with my ‘big’ camera.

2013-09-12_0001.jpg

I really love this image… something about it speaks to me. Kennedy loves to be outside. Especially first thing in the morning. And now that she is a little Kindergartner she does not get to get out of bed and run right outside. But, when she is needing a little break we take two minutes and she runs outside and wanders around. When she comes back she is normally smiling.
2013-09-12_0002.jpg

It’s the light and the sippy cup and just the general routine that makes me love these pictures of Bristol. Every morning she gets up and asks for chocolate milk in a sippy cup and TV. She is typically the first one up and this is just what she does.
2013-09-12_0003.jpg

I really liked some of these images in B&W too…

Karis Giana

My sweet and adorable little niece… I haven’t really taken any pictures of her since she was a newborn, which is crazy! (You can see her newborn session HERE) she has since grown into a happy, smiley baby who loves to play with her feet and put her toes in her mouth. And, she has some of the most beautiful blue eyes…

Blakely {Birthday Sesh}

For Blakely’s first Birthday we got together for a little cake smash session, and lemonade stand fun. Blakely, however, did not find the cake smashing part fun. At all. Take a look….

She was all happy before we brought the cake out…

Brittany, thank you!
